Fired: Google Employee Who Wrote About Gender Equality Practices and Culture of Suppressing Honest Discussion

James Damore, who published a memo that discusses differences between men and women and criticizes Google's internal efforts to increase "diversity" and "gender equality," was fired by CEO Sundar Pichai this week.

The memo Damore wrote questions whether these policies are correct, and it argues men and women are naturally different and so differences in how they fit in in the economy or a business shouldn't all be put down to "sexism." He also argues that a Left-leaning culture at Google stifles honest discussion and debate.

The reply from Google came from new Diversity, Integrity and Governance CEO Danielle Brown, in which she wrote about the memo, which she described as "... expressing views on the natural abilities and characteristics of different genders, as well as whether one can speak freely of these things at Google ... . I found that it advanced incorrect assumptions about gender.

"Part of building an open, inclusive environment means fostering a culture in which those with alternative views, including different political views, feel safe sharing their opinions. But that discourse needs to work alongside the principles of equal employment found in our Code of Conduct, policies, and anti-discrimination laws."

The decision to fire Damore was made after a serious discussion at Google. “Just like all of Google is struggling with this, we were not unanimous at first about whether what he wrote merited firing, although we all came around to it,” one top exec told Gizmodo. “But Sundar had to make a call about what kind of Google he wanted to stress and he did.”

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki was quoted, “While people may have a right to express their beliefs in public, that does not mean companies cannot take action when women are subjected to comments that perpetuate negative stereotypes about them based on their gender. Every day, companies take action against employees who make unlawful statements about co-workers, or create hostile work environments.”

Google Starts Removing Private Medical Records from Search

Google updated their policy for personal info, adding 'private medical records' to the things they remove from search results.

What else have they excluded so far? National or government issued identification numbers, bank account numbers, credit card numbers and images of signatures.

The concern is that the information, which can be highly damaging if mistreated, can be leaked, hacked, or subject to errors.

Google VS Terrorism

Google's now going to be doing new things to reduce terrorist videos.

They'll be using a new algorithm to automatically find terrorism images, and will have more people working to monitor videos.

It will also effect educational and other videos that are about terrorism or include images that promote subjugation of religions or races. They'll have warnings now, and they won't have commenting available. This means that they will also have less engagement and will be harder to find.

A Google System on a Chip?

This week Google hired Manu Gulati, who designed Apple's custom mobile phone processor (SOC).

Why? People suspect it has to do with Google's new phone, Pixel. The phone, which competes with a couple of others at the top of the commercial cell phone market, has been reviewed positively, and has sold well over a million items, but analysts think Google thinks they need to do more: namely, they need to develop their own SOC, just like Apple's popular phones have, and just like Samsung, Huawei, and LG later did.

Google Cares Less and Less About College

Google's head of ops was interviewed by the Times this week, and, although the company used to look for GPAs and brand name schools (as well as good answers in Google's famous weird-question interviews), now they look less at top college creds, or even graduation.

What is Google looking for now? A couple of specific things in addition to the regular general things: One is "intellectual humility," where people can take a step back and accept a coworkers superior idea, and learn from it. There is an element of "failing well" in this.

The other is "general cognitive ability." Ie, instead of the credentials earned in a structured university, a person is able to learn new things when they set themselves to it. Google has "structured behavior interviews" that test for this, and the company tests their tests to make sure they're predictive.

Tech Stocks Continue Downward

The drop started last Friday, and continued over the weekend and on Monday. The big tech stocks, like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft, which have been on a long upward trend, have dropped significantly.

The drop is considered possibly overdue given the high out-performance and positioning of the stocks.

Softbank Buying Google's Robot Company

Japanese telecom company Softbank (the 62nd largest public company in the world) is buying Boston Dynamics from Alphabet (Google's parent company). Softbank also got Japanese bipedal robotics company Schaft as part of the deal.

Details of the deal weren't published.

Google bought Boston Dynamics in 2013 but put it back up for sale again last year. There were questions about what Google could really make of the venture, and also there were questions about the effect giant metal dog-like robots, which might find applications in warlike settings, would have on the image of Google.

Japan is a country that has publicly made it known that they will not look to immigration to add labor to support their aging population of baby boomers. They will instead look to robots.

Chinese Brand Enters Top 10 Most Valuable, Along With 9 American Brands

Who is Tencent? It's the largely unknown (maybe because it's pretty media shy) parent company of China's ubiquitous WeChat social media app.

Their market cap is $330b, more than JPMorgan Chase.

500m people in China (of 650m total) use WeChat for communicating, finding goods and services, getting directions, and paying for things.

Who else is on the top 10 list?

Google is still #1, for the last 11 years. It's market cap is around 600b.

After that, there's Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, AT&T, Visa, Tencent at #8, IBM, and McDonald's.

Google Exec Makes $200m for the Year

Now that Google is a sub-company inside Alphabet -- which is run by founders Sergey Mikhaylovich Brin and Larry Page -- Google is run by Sundar Pichai, and his earnings are up almost double from 2015.

In 2016, he made $199.7m. $650k is his base pay, and $198.7m was a stock award.

Google is reportedly more profitable under Pichai. It has boosted sales from its core advertising and YouTube business, and is working on cloud computing, machine learning, and hardware, including smartphones, VR headsets, routers, and smart speakers.

Alphabet is growing. GOOG's stock rose above a $600b market cap this week for the first time.

Alphabet's (GOOG) 2017 Q1 Earnings Call

Alphabet's exec Ruth Porat spoke on a conference call this week about the company's Q1:

"Our revenues of $24.8 billion in the first quarter demonstrate our broad-based strength globally, with revenues up 22% year on year. In constant currency, our consolidated revenues grew 24% versus 1Q 2016. Growth in advertising revenues was again driven by mobile search, with ongoing strength in YouTube and programmatic. We also had substantial growth in other revenues from Play, hardware, and Cloud. ... We realized a negative currency impact on our revenues year over year of $304 million or $87 million after the benefit of our hedging program."
